Jupiter was one of the most important gods of ancient Rome, he is etymologically identical to the Greek god Zeus. Jupiter oversaw all aspects of life, he was the god of light, a protector during defeat and the giver of victory. Military commanders would pay homage to Jupiter at his temple after winning in battle.
